Brief
An opening title sequence for the film, Moonlight.

Plot
Moonlight is a coming of age story that chronicles the life of Chiron from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world, while growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami. The film explores the difficulties he faces with his sexuality and identity, including the physical and emotional abuse he endures.
Concept
In the film, bodies of water are seen as a safe space or a soft reset in Chiron’s stressful life. With this in mind, I wanted to create a symbolic sequence of water in a cup spilling over and making its way into the ocean. The water represents Chiron’s path from childhood to adulthood. The journey is long and rough, but in the end, Chiron finds his peace.
Style Frames
Process
Mood
Themes of loneliness and coldness and what the ocean meant to Chiron. I wanted to use the color blue to showcase all of these feelings.
Approach
Stained paper and watercolor effects is used a framing device to further emphasize the theme of water and Chiron painting his own path to adulthood.
For type treatment, I used Orator with an overlay from the frame and a soft blur to make it glow, as a reference to the title.
